Ongoing Foster Parent Training:
Day of Training, Winter 2026

January 10, 2026

9:00 AM - 3:00 PM

Beech Acres Parenting Center
615 Elsinore Place, Suite 500, Cincinnati, 45202
Join us at our offices at 615 Elsinore Place for an all day training session. We're very excited for this year's lineup: 9am-11am:  Anna Hazard from The Character Effect gives us a presentation on Natural Strengths Parenting. Before you sigh and say "another NSP class?" you've yet to experience a presentation from Ms Hazard. She brings a tremendous amount of energy, excitement, experience, and knowledge to this work.  You’ll learn how you can incorporate Character Strengths, Mindful, and Intentional practices into your daily life and work as a foster parent. You’ll also learn about recent theories and research surrounding the rise in mental well-being struggles with children and teens, and ways to support the children and youth in your home with Natural Strength Practices. *Be sure to go back to your VIA Character Strengths survey and note your five highest/top strengths and your five lowest strengths, and bring that list with you to this training.*
Resource Readiness topics covered:
  • Trauma and its impact on children and the family; promoting attachment
  • Managing placement transitions
  • Mental health, self-regulation, and self-care
***
11:15am-12:15pm: presented by Marcie Keith, Community Engagement Manager from the Clermont County Mental Health & Recovery Board
Early childhood—from birth to age six—is a critical period for shaping lifelong outcomes. This session looks at how post-COVID challenges like increased screen time, social disruption, parental mental health struggles, and substance use risks are impacting young children and families. We’ll review local data trends, including rising early intervention referrals and developmental delays, and explore the growing influence of technology on brain development and family interaction. Key Topics:
  • Why early childhood matters: brain development and ROI of early investment
  • Post-COVID realities: mental health crisis, readiness gaps, substance risks
  • Technology and development: screen time effects and digital wellness
  • Cannabis concerns: accidental ingestion and impaired parenting
The session emphasizes upstream prevention and calls for collaborative action to create conditions where all children thrive. "Children’s outcomes reflect our societal priorities."
Resource Readiness topics covered:
  • Family safety
  • Substance abuse
  • Community health and social services available to children and their foster families
***
12:15pm-12:45pm: Lunch (provided by Beech Acres)
***
12:45pm-2:45pm: Callie Welch, Beech Acres' Director of Implementation and Impact, will guide us in a role playing activity on the impacts of domestic violence followed by a discussion. This exercise is to help people develop awareness and understanding of stigmas and myths surrounding domestic violence. You will be asked to “Walk in their Shoes” and make decisions based on the scenario you are given. Please be aware that this simulation includes scenarios that involve domestic violence, including emotional, physical, and psychological abuse. Some participants in the past have found this exercise to be a very emotional experience. We will be discussing local statistics and resources available to help people experiencing DV. (Prior to coming to The Beech, Callie served as a VP of Intervention at a local DV/SA agency and a Probation Officer for various counties in the State of Ohio. She is passionate about client advocacy and resources education to ensure that voices from all communities are heard.)
Resource Readiness topics covered:
  • Legal and ethical issues for caregivers
  • Community health and social services available to children and their foster families
***
2:45pm-3pm: Concluding remarks and wrap up
All sessions will be held in the Love of Learning Training Room. Please contact us at FCTraining@BeechAcres.org if you have any questions or if you are a foster parent from another agency interested in attending.
