This is an ongoing training class for already licensed foster parents.  ***This class will be conducted via Zoom*** Class link will be emailed to you on the day of the class. Because children are exposed to a variety of environments, it is imperative that caregivers have the ability to identify common concerns quickly in order to stop the spread of disease processes and help keep their families healthy. In addition to signs and symptoms, you will review best practices in preventing the further spread of illness. Please reserve one ticket per attendee. This course helps participants understand the short and long-term impact on children exposed to substances prenatally including FASD. Also covered are issues that may be present if parents use(d) substances and medical issues that can arise due to substance exposure including a higher risk of later addiction. The genetic component of addiction and addiction as a chronic disease is described. This course also shares parenting strategies for children exposed to substances prenatally. This class helps participants understand trauma and toxic stress. Participants will also learn how the brain adapts based on experience and it’s impact on attachment and development. Lastly, participants will identify the needs to learn new skills and knowledge when providing care to a child who has experienced trauma.

This class helps participants identify the knowledge and skills needed to effectively use discipline strategies, identify components of an effective approach to discipline, and identify three elements of an effective discipline strategy. We will also explore de-escalation strategies. The latter part of the training will review legal permanency options for the child and help to describe your role in supporting permanency goals.

This course helps learners understand their role on the child protection team as defined by state rules and agency policies. This course also provides an overview of the caregiver’s responsibilities, including advocacy, mandated reporting, supporting the Family Case Plan, partnering with the primary family, and meeting the child’s needs.  Learners explore the lived experiences of children in foster care, the importance of belonging, and how assumptions can affect relationships.  Through guided reflection and practical strategies, learners will understand what is needed to enhance the sense of belonging for every child in their home.

This module helps learners understand their need to partner with the primary family for the child’s benefit. The importance of empathy is explored, and learners consider child protection from the perspective of the primary family. Participants will also learn to identify the C.A.R.E. guide as Ohio’s recommended best practice in co-parenting and reunification efforts. Lastly, we will discuss how to support relationships with other important people, including siblings.

Understanding & Supporting Behaviors In Crisis

(in person)

This is a required class on most training plans. When working with a foster child in crisis, you need to have a specific plan for supporting your child. Because behavior is communication, you can help to effectively de-escalate crisis situations by responding in intentional, strength-based, and mindful ways.  This training will help you to better understand your child’s behavior, identify different stages of a behavioral crisis, and provide tools for intentional, strength-based, mindful interventions. Class will be held at Beech Acres Parenting Center in the Love of Learning-A Training Room This class satisfies the required Crisis Intervention/De-escalation training topic as well as the Resource Readiness topics Family Safety and Mental Health, Self-Regulation, and Self-Care

Through guided discussions and shared experiences participants will leave with emotional support and a deeper sense of connection with others on a similar path. The Effects of Caregiving on the Caregiving Family

Module 1 provides an overview of the child welfare system and examines the differences between foster care, adoption, and kinship care. Participants receive information about the needs of waiting children as well as the process of becoming a foster or kinship caregiver or adoptive parent. We will also examine the impact of foster care, kinship care, and adoption on individual members of the caregiving family as well as the impact on their relationships with one another. Adolescent Development 

Module 2 introduces the core concepts of early childhood development. Participants receive an overview of brain development and gain an awareness of the importance of attachment, self-regulation, and initiative to child development. Factors that enhance development are also addressed. We will also review the developmental changes that happen during adolescence and the foster parent’s role in preparing the youth for independent living.
