Jerri Rednour, An Everyday Ohio Hero

Jerri Rednour, a Family Specialist in the Kinship Connections Program at Beech Acres Parenting Center has been named an Everyday Ohio Hero by the Ohio Children’s Trust Fund. “Jerri is a loving grandmother who provided kinship care for her two grandsons when their home life was interrupted, Kinship Connections Manager Dawn Merritt said. “Jerri provides a safe, loving, and supportive home for her grandchildren.”  Jerri’s support of kinship care in Ohio doesn’t end with her own individual experience. Jerri has learned and grown from her experience which has driven a passion to provide support to other adults providing kinship care. As a Family Specialist at Beech Acres Parenting Center, Jerri has helped others navigate through the court system and provide community resources that improve children’s well-being, improves family function, and support these other kin caregivers. Jerri’s road to supporting kinship care providers is a unique one. Jerri worked in the business world as a purchasing specialist for 41 years. After losing her husband to cancer in 2008, Jerri decided it was time to expand her career to something familiar and heartfelt. Jerri became a Weekend Coordinator at the American Cancer Society Cincinnati Hope Lodge, where she worked for 8 years. “I felt a deep personal commitment and wanted to brighten the days of others as they faced possibly their most difficult of times,” Jerri said. Soon after starting this position, Jerri’s life unexpectedly changed.  An unexpected, and unfortunate set of circumstances interrupted her grandson’s home lives. Without hesitation, Jerri picked them up, took them in, and begin caring for them. “One summer morning I picked up my two young grandsons for the weekend, unaware that this was going to be a new beginning for all of us,” Jerri recalled. “I was so unprepared!”  Kinship care is often an unexpected situation for grandparents. Brought upon by unexpected and unfortunate circumstances, caring for a loved one’s child can be a difficult transition that often comes long after a caregiver has last cared for a child day to day. What is extraordinary is these grandparents, aunts, uncles and other loving adults step up to care for these children without hesitation and often without any idea where to turn for help.  “The boys and I clung together out of fear and necessity and together we built our new, unconventional family one challenge at a time, Jerri said. “Finding help was like mining diamonds, oh so precious and oh so rare.” As her job at the Hope Lodge was ending, Jerri decided she wanted to continue something heartfelt, meaningful, and familiar. Her job search led her to Beech Acres Parenting Center. “The position I discovered mirrored my most recent experience, my life, my passion…Kinship Care,” Jerri said.  “I wanted to smooth the transition, lessen the stress, and fill in the gaps for all new Kinship Families,”  Jerri said. “I wanted to help those that shared the same feelings that I did as a new Kin Caregiver when I was surprised, overwhelmed, and lost!  I had great love to share and high expectations, but what I did not have was direction, support, and financial assistance.” Kinship Connections, with support from the Ohio Children’s Trust Fund, Mental Health Recovery Services of Warren and Clinton Counties, and OhioKAN, helps kin caregivers find financial resources, navigate complex paperwork, and connect with other families in similar situations. It was a perfect fit for Jerri. “Jerri is an inspiration, not just for how she has stepped up for her own family, but for her support of other kinship caregivers in the state of Ohio,” ”, Dawn Merritt said.  Jerri is humbled to be honored as an Everyday Ohio Hero but is very proud of her work with other kinship providers in Ohio. “I am continually proud to be a part of Beech Acres Parenting Center and Kinship Connections, and for my personal journey, I am proud to say, “Boys, we made it!”

Giving Tuesday, Kinship, Kinship Connections

Giving Tuesday is Next Week! Support Grandmas like Miss Valerie With A Gift To Beech Acres Parenting Center!

Miss Valerie is just one of nearly 100,000 grandparents providing care for a loved one’s child. Many of the grandparents find themselves in these unexpected circumstances due to unfortunate circumstances such as domestic violence, the opioid epidemic, or the death of a parent. They all just want to do the best they can to care for their grandchildren. Miss Valerie is co-parenting her six great-grandchildren with her granddaughter. The children range in age from a teenager all the way to a 5-month-old baby girl. It’s a busy life and not one she expected to be living at her age. Thanks to your support Miss Valerie has access to valuable resources she didn’t even know were available to her. Kinship Connections through Beech Acres Parenting Center provides access to financial resources, help with navigating complex paperwork, and most importantly, connections with other caregivers in similar circumstances. Miss Valerie has been attending Kinship classes for over a year and always makes sure to bring plenty of great questions, and plenty of pictures of her great-grandchildren. Caregivers in Kinship Connections share stories and laughter, and yes even a few tears, but they are stronger together and take what they learn back home to care for the children in their home. This #GivingTuesday support kinship caregivers with a gift to Beech Acres Parenting Center. 9% of all children in Ohio are being raised by a grandparent or other relative that needs support now. You can make a difference with your gift today.

Beech Acres Parenting Center Kinship Connections In The Spotlight

Earlier this week, representatives from the Government Accountability Office (GAO) visited Beech Acres Parenting Center to explore and better understand the successes of our Kinship Connections program. Kinship Connections Kinship Connections at Beech Acres Parenting Center was established to address the growing needs of grandparents and other relatives who find themselves caring for a loved one’s child unexpectedly due to unforeseen or unfortunate circumstances. In Ohio, over 200,000 children are being cared for in homes primarily by their grandparents or another relative. The growing opioid epidemic has exacerbated this issue. Kinship Connections, funded by the Ohio Children’s Trust Fund and the Mental Health Recovery Services of Warren and Clinton Counties, is designed to assist families in Southwest Ohio by helping them navigate complex paperwork, connecting them with valuable resources, and building camaraderie among families experiencing similar circumstances. Government Accountability Office Research The Government Accountability Office had the following questions and research objectives during their visit: 1. What is known about the trends in the number of grandparents and other older relatives raising children, and factors related to these trends? 2. What are the key challenges that these older relative caregivers face, and how do selected state and local officials report addressing these challenges? 3. To what extent has HHS supported state efforts to adopt recent federal initiatives targeted to older relative caregivers? Our Solution for Ohio Beech Acres Parenting Center has carefully followed trends in this arena, adjusting our program to meet the needs of the community as they evolve. Local agencies such as Hamilton County Jobs and Family Services (HCJFS) and government officials including County Commissioner Denise Driehaus, and Moira Weir and Chandra Mathews-Smith at HCJFS are aware of our efforts. They have a vested interest and are having conversations with Beech Acres Parenting Center. Key challenges include resources, financial, legal, and basic needs. Kinship Caregivers are also challenged with the emotional trauma associated with what brought the children into their care as well in addition to the standard challenges of parenting that all parents face. Kinship Connections is based in Natural Strength Parenting™, Beech Acres Parenting Center’s unique approach to parenting that combines intentionality, character strengths, and mindfulness, which empowers Kinship providers to address these challenges effectively. Kinship Connections also incorporates proven approaches such as Positive Parenting Program (Triple P) to provide comprehensive support to these families. The Health and Human Services Family First Prevention Act will support care for families like the those served in Kinship. The Act will fund services to allow children that are at risk for foster care placement to stay with their relatives and loved ones. Seeing An Impact During the visit, GAO officials were able to observe a well-attended kinship meeting where caregivers were able to hear about available resources, connect and share their experiences and stories with each other, and participate in a self-care activity based in mindfulness. They also visited with Kinship Manager Dawn Merritt and her entire team to understand how they are implementing the program and having a positive effect on the families and communities that they work with every day.
