This one hour class provides an overview of foster care rules and polices for individuals becoming approved as alternative caregivers or respite providers to care for foster children. ** Please note that this class is not eligible for ongoing training credit and is only approved for Alternative Care and Respite Providers. **This training will occur as a virtual Live Synchronous Webinar. Video is REQUIRED.

Before you sigh and say "another NSP class?" you've yet to experience a presentation from Ms Hazard. She brings a tremendous amount of energy, excitement, experience, and knowledge to this work.  You’ll learn how you can incorporate Character Strengths, Mindful, and Intentional practices into your daily life and work as a foster parent. You’ll also learn about recent theories and research surrounding the rise in mental well-being struggles with children and teens, and ways to support the children and youth in your home with Natural Strength Practices.

Foster Parents will review the Ohio rules and Beech Acres policies for foster and kinship care providers.

Module 1 provides an overview of the child welfare system and examines the differences between foster care, adoption, and kinship care. Participants receive information about the needs of waiting children as well as the process of becoming a foster or kinship caregiver or adoptive parent. We will also examine the impact of foster care, kinship care, and adoption on individual members of the caregiving family as well as the impact on their relationships with one another. Participants are introduced to effective coping strategies to prevent against burnout and secondary traumatic stress.

Module 2 introduces the core concepts of early childhood development. Participants receive an overview of brain development and gain an awareness of the importance of attachment, self-regulation, and initiative to child development. Factors that enhance development are also addressed. We will also review the developmental changes that happen during adolescence and the foster parent’s role in preparing the youth for independent living.

Preservice Module 3 reviews the referral, placement, and matching process. We will also discuss what an informed decision is and the agency’s involvement post-placement. The last section of the training will review medication management.

This class helps participants understand trauma and toxic stress. Participants will also learn how the brain adapts based on experience and it’s impact on attachment and development. Lastly, participants will identify the needs to learn new skills and knowledge when providing care to a child who has experienced trauma.

This class helps participants identify the knowledge and skills needed to effectively use discipline strategies, identify components of an effective approach to discipline, and identify three elements of an effective discipline strategy. We will also explore de-escalation strategies. The latter part of the training will review legal permanency options for the child and help to describe your role in supporting permanency goals.

This course helps learners understand their role on the child protection team as defined by state rules and agency policies. This course also provides an overview of the caregiver’s responsibilities, including advocacy, mandated reporting, supporting the Family Case Plan, partnering with the primary family, and meeting the child’s needs.  Learners explore the lived experiences of children in foster care, the importance of belonging, and how assumptions can affect relationships.  Through guided reflection and practical strategies, learners will understand what is needed to enhance the sense of belonging for every child in their home.

This module helps learners understand their need to partner with the primary family for the child’s benefit. The importance of empathy is explored, and learners consider child protection from the perspective of the primary family. Participants will also learn to identify the C.A.R.E. guide as Ohio’s recommended best practice in co-parenting and reunification efforts. Lastly, we will discuss how to support relationships with other important people, including siblings.
