This course also provides an overview of the caregiver’s responsibilities, including advocacy, mandated reporting, supporting the Family Case Plan, partnering with the primary family, and meeting the child’s needs.  Learners explore the lived experiences of children in foster care, the importance of belonging, and how assumptions can affect relationships.  Through guided reflection and practical strategies, learners will understand what is needed to enhance the sense of belonging for every child in their home.

The importance of empathy is explored, and learners consider child protection from the perspective of the primary family. Participants will also learn to identify the C.A.R.E. guide as Ohio’s recommended best practice in co-parenting and reunification efforts. Lastly, we will discuss how to support relationships with other important people, including siblings.

Foster Parent Support Group - 3 session set February 11, March 11, and April 8 - Please register for each class individually. This 3-session support group provides foster parents with a safe and supportive cohort to explore the unique challenges and rewards of parenting in foster care. Each session will focus on a specific aspect of the foster care experience: foster (resource) parenting as an identity, managing the emotional complexities of parenting within foster care, and fostering self-care and resilience as caregivers. Through guided discussions and shared experiences participants will leave with emotional support and a deeper sense of connection with others on a similar path. These sessions build on each other. Please try to attend all three classes.

Communicable Diseases

Because children are exposed to a variety of environments, it is imperative that caregivers have the ability to identify common concerns quickly in order to stop the spread of disease processes and help keep their families healthy. Module 1 provides an overview of the child welfare system and examines the differences between foster care, adoption, and kinship care. Participants receive information about the needs of waiting children as well as the process of becoming a foster or kinship caregiver or adoptive parent. We will also examine the impact of foster care, kinship care, and adoption on individual members of the caregiving family as well as the impact on their relationships with one another. Bringing Nature Connections to Your Family Saturday, April 18^th from 10am-12pm This training event is open to licensed foster parents and their families Travel to Cincinnati Nature Center to learn how to support children in outdoor play and exploration, and how to use nature as a calming space for connecting with your family. This workshop will have you and your child(ren) working together through outdoor activity stations with fun challenges at child and adult levels at each stop. Try to creatively cross a stream, build a home for a small creature, move your indoor activities to an outdoor space, and more! This workshop comes with free admission for the day to Cincinnati Nature Center, as well as a chance to win a variety of prizes. Most appropriate for children ages 2-10 years old, but other ages are welcome. Additional details: We'll be using CNC's Nature PlayScape (4949 Tealtown Rd, Milford, OH) for this session, which is close to bathrooms and parking. The terrain is mainly on gravel pathways with some slightly uneven terrain. Areas with benches are available nearby. This activity is 100% outdoors, so dress for the weather. Module 2 introduces the core concepts of early childhood development. Participants receive an overview of brain development and gain an awareness of the importance of attachment, self-regulation, and initiative to child development. Factors that enhance development are also addressed. We will also review the developmental changes that happen during adolescence and the foster parent’s role in preparing the youth for independent living.

Also covered are issues that may be present if parents use(d) substances and medical issues that can arise due to substance exposure including a higher risk of later addiction. The genetic component of addiction and addiction as a chronic disease is described. This course also shares parenting strategies for children exposed to substances prenatally. Resource Readiness topic covered: Substance Abuse  This class will be in person at Beech Acres Parenting Center's offices at 615 Elsinore Place, Cincinnati, OH 45202, 5th floor, in the Love of Learning-A training room. This class helps participants identify the knowledge and skills needed to effectively use discipline strategies, identify components of an effective approach to discipline, and identify three elements of an effective discipline strategy. We will also explore de-escalation strategies. The latter part of the training will review legal permanency options for the child and help to describe your role in supporting permanency goals.

This class is only open to licensed foster parents with Beech Acres, Beech Acres staff, and families in the process of getting licensed with Beech Acres.  All Foster Parents are required to attend a CPR and First Aid Training course for Adult, Child, and Infant CPR, First Aid, and AED. This training is only open to currently licensed foster parents and class size is limited. Understanding & Supporting Behaviors In Crisis

This is a required class on most training plans. When working with a foster child in crisis, you need to have a specific plan for supporting your child. Because behavior is communication, you can help to effectively de-escalate crisis situations by responding in intentional, strength-based, and mindful ways.  This training will help you to better understand your child’s behavior, identify different stages of a behavioral crisis, and provide tools for intentional, strength-based, mindful interventions. Class will be held at Beech Acres Parenting Center in the Love of Learning-A Training Room This class satisfies the required Crisis Intervention/De-escalation training topic as well as the Resource Readiness topics Family Safety and Mental Health, Self-Regulation, and Self-Care
