Beech Acres Moved To Anderson Township in 1949

In 1948, the German General Protestant Orphan Home purchased a 60-acre farm on the boundary of Mt. Washington and Anderson Township, a beautiful rural setting amid stately beech trees, where the children had been accustomed to camp for a few weeks each summer. Board Chair Everett Townsley donated one-third of the purchase price for the new location, which came to be called Beech Acres. There were six cottages housing 10 to 12 children each and a handsome administration building arranged around a grassy circular lawn. After a century on Burnet Avenue, the Home moved and evolved into the Beech Acres Parenting Center of today. But our driving force has remained the same from the start – to help children grow into capable, contributing and caring adults. Follow along all month long as we celebrate our time in Anderson Township.

Beech Acres Parenting Center To Move To Downtown Cincinnati

Beech Acres Is On The Move This October, Beech Acres Parenting Center will be moving to a new, centralized headquarters in downtown Cincinnati. Our beautiful property in Anderson Township has been a wonderful home for Beech Acres more than 70 years, however it is time for us to move to a more modern and centralized location that better meets the needs of the community. Saying Farewell To Anderson Township Our Home for over 70 Years “Our beautiful property in Anderson Township has been a wonderful home for Beech Acres,” said Laura Mitchell, president and CEO. “Beech Acres is outwardly engaged in the community, because that’s where children live their lives every day. We are excited about our new centralized location that will allow us to connect with more children and families throughout the entire Tri-State. Come celebrate our time in Anderson Township on October 20th! Our New Home   The new home for Beech Acres is 615 Elsinore Place Suite 500 Cincinnati, OH 45202, near both Eden Park and the Central Business District. Beech Acres programs and services will continue without interruption during its move, which is scheduled to be complete by the end of October. The Elsinore site is close to several important Beech Acres partners including Cincinnati Public Schools, Hamilton County Job & Family Services, Hamilton County Mental Health & Recovery Services Board, and Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center and other healthcare providers. The modern office includes large training spaces and smaller meeting rooms for more personal discussions. “Moving into downtown Cincinnati is a strategic step that will help us to serve more clients while reinforcing our already solid fiscal foundation for many years to come,” said Brittany Speed, chief financial officer for Beech Acres. In returning to Cincinnati’s urban core, Beech Acres also moves closer to its historical foundations. Established as the German General Protestant Orphan Home in 1849, the agency was first located on Burnet Avenue in Mt. Auburn. After 100 years in that location, the Home moved in 1949 to property in Anderson Township. Under the shade of the many beech trees on the site, it came to be known as Beech Acres, and later, Beech Acres Parenting Center. We’re so excited to be moving into a modern office which includes large training spaces and smaller meeting rooms for more personal discussions that will allow us to deepen the connection we have with families like yours. There will be plenty of spaces for children to continue to receive the critical behavioral health support they need. Our new location is centrally located on the bus line, has plenty of safe parking, and on-site security.  Meeting Parents, Families and Children Where They Are Over the last several decades, Beech Acres’ programs have increasingly extended beyond its campus to where children are – in homes, schools, pediatric offices and everywhere in the community. Beech Acres now serves tens of thousands of people each year through services that include parent coaching, behavioral health support, foster care, adoption and more. Beech Acres programs, based in its unique Natural Strength Parenting™ approach, build on children’s strengths to increase confidence, self-esteem and resilience. Its programs have grown to serve not only children and families in Greater Cincinnati but also in Northern Kentucky, Southwest Ohio and Dayton, and 14 states across the country. Tips For New Parents on Selecting a Pediatrician

Becoming a parent is such a huge life-changing event. Everything about becoming a parent can be overwhelming; from choosing the right pediatrician to selecting a name they may live with forever; parenting is full of tough choices.  One of those choices includes selecting the right pediatrician for your child. This can be overwhelming and stressful. Here are some things to look for when considering pediatric offices.  Location, Location, Location Choosing a convenient location may seem simple, but choosing a pediatric office that is easy to access for your family is important. This does not necessarily mean you should select the pediatric office closest to your home; there are other factors to consider but knowing you can easily and quickly get your sick child to the doctor is important.  Consider that in the first year of your child’s life, you will regularly visit your pediatrician for well-child visits. As your child gets older, these regular check-ups will likely be annual if your child is generally healthy. Still, there are sick visits, scheduled vaccinations, clinics, and sports medical forms-you may be at your pediatrician more often than you realize. And if you have multiple children, these visits increase.  Office Logistics  When looking at the location of your pediatrician, make sure you also understand their hours and availability. Here are some questions to consider; What is your and your partner’s work schedule? How do they schedule appointments? How long does it take to get in for sick and well visits? What is the off-hour schedule? What about weekend and evening availability? Do they offer on-call access to a physician?  Other things that may be important to you may be online scheduling and online access to your child’s medical records. Newsletters or social media presence with updates on the office, parenting tips, and other information may be something you are looking for to research a pediatrician or stay connected with the office.  If you have private insurance, make sure the office accepts your insurance, and you understand their policies on payments, co-pays, and prescriptions. These office logistics are just as important as the location of your doctor.  Culture  Trying to gauge the culture of an office may be more difficult, but if you visit this office at least once a year for 18 years, you want to make sure it’s a good fit for your family. Does the staff seem friendly? Are there indications that the practice’s values align with your family’s values? Parents should intentionally sit down to identify your family’s values and use those to help guide you in important decisions like this. This could include your point of view on healthcare and whether the provider aligns with those values.  Does the practice have specific philosophies on things such as parenting, sleep, circumcision, feeding, vaccines, potty training, and antibiotics? You may find philosophical differences between your family’s values and the pediatricians’ philosophies that may be indicative that this may not be a good fit.  Credentials, Certifications and Reputation Where did your pediatrician attend medical school? How long have they been practicing? Are they up to date on certifications and the latest science as it relates to child development? It’s ok to ask these questions and confirm their authenticity. You may think that a seasoned doctor who has been practicing medicine for years will have the experience to make the best decisions and recommendations about the health of your child. Or you may believe a new physician, fresh off their rotations, may bring a fresh and modern perspective to raising a healthy child. Look for degrees, certifications, and other documentation around the office.  Everyone has an opinion and the ability to share that online. Parents are likely to be vocal if they love their pediatrician, or if they have specific issues with a practice. While you certainly should not base your decision just on online reviews, checking out the practices online reputation and simply talking to people in your community can help you better understand the experiences parents before you had with this practice.  Other Important Considerations  We’ve covered some if the major considerations you should think about when selecting a pediatrician, but there are many other things that may be important to you or influence your decision. Are sick patients separated from well patients in the waiting room? Are virtual visits an option? Does your doctor have plans to retire soon? What hospitals if any is the practice affiliated with? There are so many questions to ask to make sure you make an informed decision about your child’s healthcare.  Listen to your gut—if the provider isn’t really listening to your concerns or questions, or you just don’t feel like it’s a good fit, trust that intuition. This person will likely be caring for your child for at least 18 years, so you want to make sure it’s a good fit & that you feel comfortable not only with him/her but also with other staff as well.  Finding the right pediatrician can be a stressful proposition. Proper planning, asking the right questions, and thoroughly vetting each practice will help ensure you make the right decision for your family.  Download this resource here.

Back To School

Back to School Survival Tips From Parent Connext®

Summer vacation is wrapping up, and most school-age children are returning to the classroom and to the school year structures and routines this month. Help your child’s transition back to school run more smoothly with a bit of preparation and intentionality! Take Steps to Prepare for the New School Year Start your family back on a routine. Now is the time to incrementally adjust bedtimes if needed. Involve your child in back to school shopping. This gives them ownership of the process and helps you both mentally prepare for the big day. Take advantage of any opportunities to visit the school and meet the teacher(s) if possible. Look for open houses, schedule and technology pick-up days, and other opportunities to connect with your school. Talk to Your Child About How They are Feeling About Returning to School Back-to-school time can bring with it lots of anxiety for your children. Acknowledge their fears and reservations and have conversations with them to help them mitigate their fears. They are probably also feeling excited about seeing their friends and returning to a routine, so encourage them to focus on the positive. Once you get your child’s schedule, help them plan out their day, map their routes to each class, and help them anticipate any roadblocks or challenges in their day. Watch For Changes in Their Behavior. You may notice changes in your child’s behaviors when school starts as they get used to new routines and structure. Plan to provide more downtime as they adjust to school. Perhaps plan a short vacation, a trip to the park, or a day at the movies-do something special as a family to celebrate the start of the new school year. Involve your child in deciding what to do. Review Your Own Self-Care While your kids may be busy and anxious, back-to-school can be a hectic time for YOU as well. Make sure to plan to take care of yourself during this busy time. Are you getting enough sleep? Physical exercise? Time in nature? Do you have time for fun and play? What is one way you can help reduce your stress today?

Foster Care

Take A Chance Event Recap

Thank you to everyone who attended our Take A Chance event at Washington Park on June 25th! Take A Chance There has never been a better time to consider foster care. The need for foster parents in the Greater Cincinnati and Dayton areas is greater than ever. Make a real difference in your community by exploring, supporting, or becoming a foster parent! This year we challenge YOU to take a chance on foster care! Take A Chance Event The #TakeAChance event was held to bring awareness to the need for people to consider fostering within their own community. More than 673,000 children are victims of abuse and neglect in 2018. On any given day in Ohio, nearly 16,000 children are being cared for away from their parents. A lot of families are already fostering children within their community, we want them to have additional support from our Foster Care Community. Foster Parenting Changes Generation. Children and youth can learn from families who are stable, loving, and safe. Foster parents can provide security and safety, that children can grow up and pass on to their own children, and their children will do the same. Communities like Bond Hill, Avondale, Westwood, North College Hill, and West Price Hill, can all make a difference in their communities by considering foster care. At the event, we will have a panel discussion to hit taboo topics and engage with current foster parents on what fostering really looks like the good and the not-so-fun parts. Thank you to everyone who attended! Missed the event, but interested in exploring foster care? Reach out to get started today!
