Beyond The Classroom

Improving Self-Esteem, Self-Confidence, and Test Scores: A Beyond The Classroom Success Story

Like many middle schoolers, Quinn was experiencing social anxiety. This was affecting them at school and home. Quinn was beginning to have negative interactions with his teachers, peers, friends, and even his parents. When Quinn’s mother discovered some concerning writing of Quinn’s, she feared they might be struggling with depression. She was scared and didn’t know where to turn for help.  Fortunately, Paulina, a Beech Acres Parenting Center therapist, was located at Quinn’s school. This made it simple for Quinn to access the care they needed quickly.  Paulina and Quinn worked on identifying Quinn’s strengths, setting goals, and finding positive ways to address their emotions. Together, they found ways to identify more positive ways to approach daily interactions at home and school. In addition to therapy, Paulina recommended medication to assist in Quinn’s healing.  The Beech Acres team also engaged Quinn’s parents in the healing process. One of the first things they worked on was communication. Open, honest communication is important to any healthy family relationship. The family worked together on establishing short-term and long-term goals and agreeing on how to achieve them. As their communication improved, so did their relationship. Quinn was more open to honest feedback from their parents. And their parents noticed significant improvements in the way they interacted with others.  “Thank you, Beech Acres, for caring for Quinn. They have learned how to focus better in class and improve their test scores. They also have a much higher self-esteem and more self-confidence.” Quinn’s mom said.  The family implemented a behavior chart into their routine to help Quinn understand that their behavior has consequences. This helped them understand that their behavior impacted not only them, but also everyone in the family. They’ve also set an intention to spend more one-on-one time together.  Today’s students are facing increasingly complex challenges. Social media, depression, bullying, stress, and anxiety. 1 in 5 children will be diagnosed with a mental health disorder during childhood. Many students require additional help from mental health needs to resources at home that go beyond the classroom. Beyond the Classroom™, from Beech Acres Parenting Center, is the school’s mental health answer for students that brings together positivity and hope of Natural Strength Parenting™ to the whole family. Helping Overcome Anxiety at Home and at School: A Beyond The Classroom Success Story

Calla* was scared of bees and wasps. But aren’t all nine-year-olds like Calla scared of bees? Sure, but for Calla, her fear of bugs indicated deeper issues she was experiencing. Calla experienced severe anxiety over this fear. But she was also anxious in many other situations. Her anxiety manifested in her fear of bugs, as well as anxiety about going to the doctor and stress at school.  Calla’s mother was frustrated because she didn’t know how to help her daughter overcome these issues. Calla was connected to a Beech Acres Parenting Center therapist right in her school. Having access to a compassionate mental health professional right in her school helped accelerate Calla’s care.  Calla’s therapist used a variety of tools to help Calla overcome her fear and address her anxiety. “I needed strategies to help me calm down when I would get upset,” Calla said. Calla worked through her concerns through weekly therapy sessions she could attend during or after school. “It was helpful to talk through any issues and have my feelings validated,” she said.  Calla’s mom was also given support to help ease her frustration and tools to help manage Calla’s anxiety at home. Calla has been feeling much less anxiety since beginning therapy. Many students require additional help, from mental health needs to resources at home that go beyond the classroom. Beyond the Classroom™ enhances readiness to learn by improving the emotional and behavioral wellness of the students. Anxiety, Beyond The Classroom

Building Confidence and Identifying Strengths: A Beyond The Classroom Success Story

Samantha*, a sophomore in high school, was experiencing test-related anxiety at school. This had a negative impact on her academic performance. Her anxiety spread to her personal life, where she began feeling anxious in social situations. For example, she had trouble even ordering her own meal in a restaurant.  To help her address these challenges, Samantha was referred to a Beech Acres Parenting Center therapist right in her school. Her therapist was able to begin uncovering the root causes of her anxiety. They worked together on building her confidence by identifying her strengths. Olivia, Samantha’s therapist, took time to build a genuine connection with Samantha. This was key to helping Samantha be able to identify her struggles and be open about them in a safe space. Once her underlying issues were identified, they were able to begin healing.  Samantha recently completed exam week without feeling so anxious. She could call upon mindfulness techniques she learned in therapy to calm herself down. She’s even feeling more confident and comfortable in social situations as well.  Olivia worked with Samantha’s parents as well to help them be prepared to face challenges as they came up. They now know when to give Samantha space and when to give her support. Samantha and her family are now on a path to success.  Many students require additional help, from mental health needs to resources at home that go beyond the classroom.
