Greater Cincinnati Youth Mental Wellness Summit To Spark Community Discussion On Mental Health Crisis In Children

Beech Acres Parenting Center will combine efforts with Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center; the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine, Center for Integrative Health and Wellness; and the City of Cincinnati for a conversation on the growing mental health crisis for children that was detailed by U.S. Surgeon General Vivek Murthy in his recent advisory, ”Protecting Youth Mental Health.”  REGISTER ONLINE HERE The collaboration of local experts will be highlighted by the first Greater Cincinnati Youth Mental Wellness Summit on February 8 (details below). The summit will include direct outreach to local school superintendents and school principals. The ultimate goal of this joint initiative is to spark discussion on the Surgeon General’s message on the mental health crisis in our youth while providing school superintendents and school principals with resources and tips to support their teachers and staff, ultimately promoting the well-being of adults and children alike. The Greater Cincinnati Youth Mental Wellness Summit will include experts from each participating organization engaging with school leaders on specific areas to support their teachers’ and staff’s health and wellbeing. Participants will have the opportunity to experience a few mindfulness and breath techniques to support their own wellbeing and self-care and then will learn three ways to support their teachers and staff during this ongoing crisis. There will be the opportunity for question-and-answer at the end of the Summit. The program will also be recorded and available to the public, clearing the way for school leadership to observe all conversations and access all the information to be shared, even if they cannot attend the event in real-time.  “We are thankful to the U.S. Surgeon General for elevating the importance of the mental health of our young people with this advisory,” said Laura Mitchell, president, and CEO of Beech Acres Parenting Center. “The first step toward providing support is to spread the word about where to turn, which is why this collaboration promises to make such a positive impact.” “Over the past several years we have had a growing challenge in meeting the mental health needs of our young people,” said Michael Sorter, MD, director of the Division of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at Cincinnati Children’s. “Suicide is the second leading cause of death of individuals aged 10 to 24 years. One in 10 children are disabled due to mental illness. The stress of COVID to our young people and families has turned this into a national crisis and emergency. We all need to work together to build the systems to support children and families.”  “The Center is honored to be joining these thought leaders in our community to advance and support the well-being of our city’s youth and those who work daily to teach, mentor, and inspire them,” said Sian Cotton, Ph.D., Turner Farm Foundation Chair and director of the U.C. Center for Integrative Health and Wellness. “It’s imperative that we take away any stigma associated with mental health initiatives for adults and youth, and promote mental health as another component of total wellness,” said Jan-Michele Lemon Kearney, vice mayor of the City of Cincinnati. The Greater Cincinnati Youth Mental Wellness Summit will take place at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, February 8, via Zoom. There is no cost to attend, although advance registration is encouraged. School representatives can contact Beech Acres Parenting Center for registration information at (513) 231-6630. Individuals can engage and follow the conversation on social media by using the hashtag #HelpCincyKids. Show Your Child “I love you” In Meaningful Ways

February brings to mind all things LOVE! By using mindfulness, we can show our love to our family in different ways every day. Knowing the 5 Love Languages can help us show our loved ones “I love you” in the ways that will mean the most to each of them as an individual. Get curious-What do you think is your child’s #1 love language? Talk to your child. Ask them “How do you know I love you?” See how they respond. Make an effort to show your child that you love them using Physical Touch and Words of Affirmation. Give them a hug and say “I love you” or offer them a back rub and tell them you’re proud of them. Show your child that you love them by giving them a small Gift(s) and by spending Quality Time with them. Buy them their favorite snack or a special treat. Play or take a walk together. Show your child you love them by completing an Act(s) of Service. Do one of their chores for them or help them with something they can do for themselves.

February is Black History Month

February is Black History Month. This year we will be celebrating by acknowledging significant contributions by Black pioneers in the area of mental health. We will also be sharing what Black History Month means to our employees through a series of videos from the team. Follow along all month long! “I am Black History. My future is unlimited. It is very intentional. I live this life. I love this life and I’m very excited to share this video with you.” David T. Brand, Senior Therapist Beech Acres Parenting Center. “The fight, the struggle, the resilience, the experiences, the life, the journey that my ancestors took for me to be able to experience Black joy…all the beautiful things that make me…me!” Donial Curry, Events and Stewardship Specialist Beech Acres Parenting Center. “I’m glad we have this time and this month to stop and reflect to think about equal rights for all people and how important that is.” Craig Dobson, Team Lead, Beyond the Classroom. “Black History Month gives us an opportunity, a more intentional space and time for learning. The more we can learn, the more we can spread the awareness and the love and the understanding, is when we will truly begin to come together as one community and lift each other up.” Amanda McDermott, Team Lead Beyond the Classroom “Black History Month has been absolutely amazing for me and my family. It means so much more now that my daughter is starting to see herself in people and see herself in the world around her.” Ashley Gray, Recruiter, Foster Care & Adoption “I feel the more I know about others the better I can have a true understanding and not judge based on stereotypes.” Diana Betz Program Data Analyst “Black History Month is really a time to celebrate, reflect and learn.” Deanna Martin Senior Specialist, Center of Excellence

Soothing Sun, A Mindful Activity from Parent Connext™

Mindful moments help the brain and body calm, connect and clarify. When this happens, it is easier for our brain to make helpful and wise decisions. Being in this present moment, allows us to take better care of ourselves and others. Try This: Use your finger and start in the center of the sun. As you trace the spiral outward, repeat: “I am calm. I am calm. I am calm.” Next, trace the spiral back inward and repeat, “I am safe. I am safe. I am safe.” Then, trace the spiral outward and repeat, “I am loved. I am loved. I am loved.” Repeat these steps as many times as needed until you feel calm, safe, and loved. Family Follow Up: Practice the soothing sun technique 2 or 3 times every day with your child. If practiced when calm, it will be easier to use. Hang the picture as a reminder to practice. The motion of spiraling in and out with the finger, with the calming self-talk, can be used without the picture. Your child (or you) can make the same motion on any safe surface, such as a desk, the palm of the hand, the sleeve of a shirt, or the carpet at circle time. Ask your child: “How did you feel before you used the soothing sun? After? What did you notice about your body?” Download this activity here.

How to Create a Smooth Transition into Co-parenting

Managing a household while parenting can easily feel overwhelming, especially when navigating your family through a co-parenting lifestyle. It is natural to go through the bumps in the road when figuring out the best decisions for your kids but here are a few tips to help create a smooth transition into co-parenting.  Communication is Key You may have heard the saying “good communication is the bridge between confusion and clarity” (a quote by Nat Turner). Good communication is a key piece to the puzzle when setting a foundation to this next step in your children’s lives. When helping your children cope with divorce and the changes that come with it, it’s important to view your partner as a “business partner” and completely avoid using your children as messengers. Like the game telephone you might have played growing up, so much crucial information could get lost in the translation. Not only can it cause tension between you and your co-parent but it also puts the children in the middle of an adult situation that they should be left out of.  When communicating with your co-parent it is important to leave emotion out of the dialogue as you would a business partner. This will give you both the space and mental capacity to truly make decisions for the best interest of your child/children and not make decisions out of emotion.  Home is Where the Heart is  Just like after a long day at work, there is nothing more relaxing than being home in a space you can truly unwind in. Although “home” might look different for you and your children, your new home together can easily become a sanctuary for your family to grow and make memories in. The financial changes from a two-income home to a one-income home can be an adjustment. When in the market for your new home, consider applying for an FHA loan. FHA loans have a lower credit qualification requirement, require less money down, and have higher seller concessions.  When grounding roots in your new home, let your children help make your new home “yours”. Let them in on decisions in their room and living space, hang up photos of the memories you have made together and display a family calendar. This will give them a sense of ownership and help ease the transition to a new living space while simultaneously keeping your child in the loop of whose house they will be at on what days.   Perspective Can Change Anything A shift in perspective can change your entire experience. Being consistent in your co-parenting approach will encourage peace in your and your children’s lives and reduce stress for everyone involved. As a result, the transition from house to house will happen with ease. It is common for co-parents to hyper-focus on the smaller details of the other house, become in competition with the other parent, or even be emotionally reactive towards each other. By making a conscious effort to focus on your time with your kids, practice peace, and stay intentional when managing your interactions with the co-parent, time spent doing damage control can actually be put towards the time spent with your children.  Although co-parenting is no easy task, it can be done successfully and looked back on as a positive experience. At the end of the day, the beautiful children you have together are worth the time and effort needed to live a happy and healthy life post-divorce.
