Helping Overcome Anxiety at Home and at School: A Beyond The Classroom Success Story

Calla* was scared of bees and wasps. But aren’t all nine-year-olds like Calla scared of bees? Sure, but for Calla, her fear of bugs indicated deeper issues she was experiencing. Calla experienced severe anxiety over this fear. But she was also anxious in many other situations. Her anxiety manifested in her fear of bugs, as well as anxiety about going to the doctor and stress at school.  Calla’s mother was frustrated because she didn’t know how to help her daughter overcome these issues. Calla was connected to a Beech Acres Parenting Center therapist right in her school. Having access to a compassionate mental health professional right in her school helped accelerate Calla’s care.  Calla’s therapist used a variety of tools to help Calla overcome her fear and address her anxiety. “I needed strategies to help me calm down when I would get upset,” Calla said. Calla worked through her concerns through weekly therapy sessions she could attend during or after school. “It was helpful to talk through any issues and have my feelings validated,” she said.  Calla’s mom was also given support to help ease her frustration and tools to help manage Calla’s anxiety at home. Calla has been feeling much less anxiety since beginning therapy. Many students require additional help, from mental health needs to resources at home that go beyond the classroom. Beyond the Classroom™ enhances readiness to learn by improving the emotional and behavioral wellness of the students. Additional support is available for parents that build resilience, improves economic stability, and empowers them to become an advocate. Learn more about this innovative approach to mental health support. *Names and circumstances may have been changed to protect the privacy of these families.

Building Confidence and Identifying Strengths: A Beyond The Classroom Success Story

Samantha*, a sophomore in high school, was experiencing test-related anxiety at school. This had a negative impact on her academic performance. Her anxiety spread to her personal life, where she began feeling anxious in social situations. For example, she had trouble even ordering her own meal in a restaurant.  To help her address these challenges, Samantha was referred to a Beech Acres Parenting Center therapist right in her school. Her therapist was able to begin uncovering the root causes of her anxiety. They worked together on building her confidence by identifying her strengths. Olivia, Samantha’s therapist, took time to build a genuine connection with Samantha. This was key to helping Samantha be able to identify her struggles and be open about them in a safe space. Once her underlying issues were identified, they were able to begin healing.  Samantha recently completed exam week without feeling so anxious. She could call upon mindfulness techniques she learned in therapy to calm herself down. She’s even feeling more confident and comfortable in social situations as well.  Olivia worked with Samantha’s parents as well to help them be prepared to face challenges as they came up. They now know when to give Samantha space and when to give her support. Samantha and her family are now on a path to success. Inspire A Family This Year!

Much of the ‘magic’ of the holidays come with price tags that children should not have to understand, but the loving adults in their lives understand all too well.  YOU can provide holiday magic for a Beech Acres Parenting Center client this holiday season. YOU HAVE A CHANCE TO INSPIRE A FAMILY WITH KINDNESS! Not all families are prepared to celebrate this year. Can YOU help us inspire a family? This year we’re asking you to help provide peace of mind for an under-resourced family with a generous gift to our Inspire a Family program.  This holiday season, help inspire a family!  Our annual holiday fundraiser provides gift cards for families so parents and caregivers can provide a happier holiday for their children. Santa’s helpers take your generous cash donations and transform them to gift cards for Beech Acres families. Many of these caregivers work hard all year to make themselves better parents to their children, grandchildren, and foster children. Let’s help them have a joyous holiday by removing some of the financial burdens from their plates. Your donation goes directly to families in your community who need it most!  Our goal this year is to provide joy and peace of mind for 50 families. Will you consider a donation of $100 or more today so that we can reach our goal of raising just $5,000 by December 1st?  Your gift will help families provide a fun, peaceful, and memorable holiday this year. Your generous gift of $100 or more will certainly endure a brighter holiday for a family who needs your help this year. Won’t you help remove the stress of holiday shopping for one or more of these families?  Thank you for your generous spirit. On behalf of the families you’ve helped this year, please accept my warmest and most sincere gratitude.

November Is National Gratitude Month!

A child’s gratitude naturally grows from a loving, mindful connection to their parents. When you listen and actively engage with your kids, you are planting the seeds of gratitude. The message is that they matter and that you are grateful for the love and time that you share. What is Gratitude?  Gratitude, as an individual character strength, is defined as “I appreciate the good things that happen to me.” Appreciating the good things that happen to you, both big and small, can have an exponentially positive effect on your mood and your life. How can you celebrate Gratitude with your family? Begin by modeling Gratitude. Your children are always watching you and, more importantly, looking up to you. The things you do and say will impact them and influence how they behave. An easy way to model gratitude in your daily routine is to tell your kids “Thank you” any time they cooperate or do something you ask them to. Really reinforce this by thanking them if they do something without being told.  Next, notice any time your child expresses gratitude. When a child says “thank you,” they are expressing their gratitude. Whether they are saying it in response to a gift, a hug, or picking them up from basketball practice-make, note of this. Try saying, “I love what a grateful spirit you have,” or, “thanks so much for always remembering to say thank you.” It will make a difference. You may even hear them say thank you more often! Wouldn’t that be nice? Show gratitude for who they are as a unique individual and all of the wonderful strengths and personality traits they exhibit.  Focus on what they are doing right much more than what they are doing wrong. Make gratitude part of your family’s routine. This can be daily, monthly or annually. An easy way to do this daily is to have everyone share one thing they are grateful for at dinnertime. Too busy to have dinner together? We get it. Set an intention to find time each day to share what you are grateful for. From breakfast to bedtime, there’s always time for a moment of gratitude. You can further integrate gratitude into your family by planning a day each month to volunteer for a cause that is important to your family. Helping others deepens your feeling of gratitude as it makes you more grateful for the things you do have. Go even further with a big annual gesture; run a 5k as a family that supports a cause you love, volunteer at a food bank during the holidays, find something BIG to give back to the community. What If My Child Struggles To Express Gratitude? When children seem ungrateful, it is most important to get curious about the need and feeling underneath their behavior. Addressing the root cause of their feelings compassionately will usually resolve the issue.  Need more help?
